I still find it wild that a fall in figure skating only costs you 1 point, when the top skaters have totals of over 200 points. I find it strange to watch competitions where two skaters can compete similar difficulty, have similar presentation, and one falls and still manages to win - it makes much more sense to me in gymnastics where unless you're Simone Biles, a fall generally takes you out of the running for a medal. It would make more sense to me for skaters to lose 5 or 10 points for a fall, so that they only competed jumps that they knew they had a high chance of making every time instead of just chucking endless dodgy quads.

Yep, this is a good point that is vigorously debated. Keep in mind it depends how you fall -- if the tech panel determines a skater fell after finishing the rotations of the jump, he/she/they would lose 5 points on the grade of execution (assigned by judges) and sustain the 1 point deduction. Plus, the program component score for presentation would be limited to 9.5 (a very high score only top skaters achieve). If the fall happened in conjunction with under rotating the jump, a quarter turn (<) or more than a quarter turn (<<), then the BV would be lowered as well.
